UNRAVEL PILOT
Information and FAQs

  • Unravel is an early stage startup. We are running the pilot - with funding from Alderley Science Park Accelerator and Zinc Accelerator (a program for impact-focused businesses).

We are three female founders, and one of us is a doctor trained in hospital medicine and clinical research. Our mission is to close the data gap that exists in women's hormone health. Without the ability to have a full cycle view of hormones, we remain limited in our knowledge about their essential influence on all aspects of health, and the huge difference in 'norms' impacted by everything from genetics, to climate to ethnicity.

  • We have done hundreds of hours of interviews with many different women. We've heard time and time again that women want to better understand their symptoms in order to figure out what's really going on in their bodies.
Women are intuitively excited to be able to better visualise their fluctuations in more detail than just a one-off blood test.
And yet, it's hard to pinpoint exactly how we might make these daily results useful, and what onward paths and actions seeing hormone data can lead to.
It's a question that is hard to answer in theory, so this pilot is our method of giving women a new view of their hormones. Together we can finally understand how this data can be presented, what information would be most useful, and why.

  • The pilot will last for one menstrual cycle.

You can register at any time, and will be sent a testing kit. You will start testing on day 1 or 2 of your cycle and continue until you get next period.

Once you're finished, we'll book in a 1:1 interview to talk about your experience and create a report of your results.

  • Women selected for the pilot will be sent a testing kit. This consists of a small palm-sized reader device, and a set of 30 urine testing sticks (similar to a pregnancy test).

Each woman will start on day 1 of her next cycle. She will do the urine test each day of her cycle, in the morning with first urine.

    Here are the steps:

    • Collect urine into small silicone cup (provided)

    • Dip in urine test in for 20 seconds

    • Inset into reader, and wait countdown of 16 minutes (you can shower, get ready, make coffee etc. while you wait!)

    • Once the timer is done, the little screen on the device will show hormone level numbers. You will enter these into a simple app.

    • Once numbers are entered, you'll be able to see a graph of your hormones as they fluctuate and change with each day

At the end of the month, you will have a one-on-one interview with one of the cofounders to discuss your results.
Any results out of the norm will be reviewed with you and a doctor (our cofounder!).

  • Participants will see their daily data plotted along the normal ranges. Their levels will be reviewed by a doctor each day, and they'll be notified each time they move into a new phase of a cycle - for example when they've ovulated and are into luteal phase.
For each phase, they'll receive guidance on what's happening, and recommendations on things like food, mood and exercise.

Participants will also be able to log symptoms and see how they correlated to their hormones.
For some of the more common symptoms, we aim to provide evidence-based explanations and recommendations for management.

Participants will also receive a one-hour follow-up conversation to discuss their experience, and a call with a doctor for anything that's out of norm.

Participants will not be receiving diagnosis or official medical advice.

  • While we are running the pilot as a private company, we have part-time scientific staff from the University of Glasgow on our team, who are building our eventual hormone device.

We also have an advisor who is a senior lecturer at UCL specialising in a patient adherence and endocrinology.

And finally, we have our co-founder who is a medical doctor, having trained at Cambridge and Oxford hospitals. She has worked in both clinical research and directly with patients in hospitals and GP practices.

  • Data is stored securely, encrypted and will only be used by Unravel Health Ltd. All published results will be de-identified.
